Art Block and OCs

Oooooh boy, it's everyone's favourite! Art block woohoo!

A couple years ago I decided that drawing was not for me. Idk I just didn't like what I was making compared to others #comparisonisthethiefofjoy. I'm one of those people who will give up if I can't master a skill in an hour lol. But basically, I just stopped drawing for a loooong time. I didn't care for it anymore. I didn't know what to even draw anymore.

I did eventually get back into drawing (duh) but I struggled with ideas. I've always like creating characters and storylines... though none of them really clicked with me. Coming up with fleshed out/well designed characters or the storyline was too hard xd

There was one concept that went decently far. It was about a student pilot who crash lands in the year 3000, or an alternate dimension, or another realm... lmao can you tell why I abandoned this and he meets a taskforce that subdues 'oddities'... strange 'oddities' that remind him of things from his time/realm. And the taskforce seems to be keeping a couple secrets... It was pretty fun, and the cast was quite interesting (some VERY undeveloped). Personal favourite to write for was the antagonist, who had a savior complex.

So that was the cast I primarily drew and created content for, switching favourites every couple months lol. Still didn't draw very often though...

Until one fateful day in June, when I stared at my clarinet for a bit too long... Yes, that is the origin story. That coupled with "oh hey, I kinda miss my penpal and exchange student TT". And so that night, I scribbled the concept designs with little to no thought lol.

It was a magical girl concept. Thought it would be something silly and light. Every decision made was made because "that would be funny". But of course, it did end up slipping into heavier themes surrounding loneliness and mental health.

Although, if I put the main storyline aside, they were still pretty fun! All the characters were (somehow) fully developed and I liked the dynamics. I also wasn't struggling with casual clothing this time round!!!! (see previous journal entry xd) I liked creating slice of life-y content with them. It was super wholesome.

I did kinda get "bored" with the magical girl aesthetic and wanted the uniform to be more sleek. Besides that, they've pretty much remained the same since conception.

So yeah, these rascals pulled me out of art block and I'm sosososo glad ( 'ヮ')

Clothes

I don't think I was ever that creative when it came to clothes lol. Before I only ever drew plain shirts and maybe a jacket/hoodie. Like there was no graphic or pattern it was so boring xd but it did make drawing characters repeatedly way easier. Oh yeah, layering was not a concept to me lol

I think something that helped was actually owning a bunch of graphic shirts and "interesting" clothes.

In fact, Hina's t-shirt collection is based on actual shirts I own (and have owned). Certain clothing items for the other characters are also straight out of my closet.

Do I have regrets making Hina exclusively wear graphic shirts? Maybe. They are a pain to animate in particular. BUT they are sosososo fun to draw and it has personality!

And I think it's a funny way to sign my work xd

Animating

I started the youtube channel back in July? I think. Truthfully, I only started properly animating like 3 years ago, and I didn't do it very often and it was usually sketchy stuff. BUT I've been into animation since the prime days of animation memes xd.

I've been so (for a lack of a better word) depressed with school/work/life, and creating stuff served as a distraction. And for SOME REASON, I always get bursts of motivation and energy when I have assignments to do LOL.
